Let’s be honest here, my days are full! I’m a busy girl! I don’t like using the word “busy” very often since I find it’s over glorified in many cases. That said, because my days are filled with work, family, friends, and all sorts of other great things, I hardly have time to eat right… if I’m not prepared.

So what’s my secret?

I have two of them and they’re pretty simple. I:

  1. meal plan as often as I can and I eat leftovers
  2. let go of the idea of a perfect diet

Let’s look at each one.

Meal Planning

You might think that meal planning is actually quite time consuming and that a busy person couldn’t possibly do it. But that’s not so!

By planning out and preparing meals ahead of time, you’ll save hours of time of prep and cooking time during the week. Your meals might be cooked ahead of time, or at least prepped to a point where all you have to do is turn on the oven or throw it in a pan and fry it up. At most, supper takes me about 20 minutes during the week. If it takes longer, it’s simply because I had to throw it in the oven and wait for it to cook.

I also incorporate lots of slow cooker options, especially during the winter months when we’re constantly running to the hockey rink for games.

The next benefit of meal planning is that I’m less tempted to get take-out. That leads to a cost savings and less fatty foods in my body.

When meal planning, I almost always cook enough for leftovers. The healthy food I had for supper then becomes my lunch for the next day or gets divided into individual containers and frozen for a lunch or supper the next week. Now that’s a time saver!

Let That “Stuff” Go!

Are you hard on yourself if you happen to not be prepared and need to get take-out one night of the week? Do you feel guilty if you had one extra piece of dessert?

The more overwhelmed I feel about my food, the greater chance I’ll self-sabotage and let the whole week go to pot instead of just one meal or one day.

Be kind to yourself busy girl! All that stress you’re putting yourself through by worrying is causing you more harm that that piece of cake you just had or the drive-thru meal you just gobbled down!

Stress increases your cortisol levels and in turn keeps you from losing weight, so take a chill pill and enjoy your food!
